Kitchen tiling that works around your home
Losing your kitchen is one of the most disruptive jobs in a house, and I plan around that. Worktops, units and appliances are covered before I start, and the room is cleared and tidied at the end of every day.
On the wall, the detail that gives a kitchen away is the cuts. A splashback full of thin slivers around sockets and switches looks rushed. I set every wall out first so the cuts are balanced, whether it's a new kitchen in Sheffield or a splashback refresh in Penistone.
Kitchen work I take on
- Kitchen splashbacks
- Full-height kitchen walls

Tiling around a working kitchen
Neat details, minimal disruption
Your kitchen is in use every day. Here's how I keep the work tidy and the finish sharp.
-
Balanced cuts around sockets
Each wall is laid out from the centre first. If a socket or switch would end up with a sliver, I shift the layout by half a tile.
-
Worktops and appliances covered
Dust sheets and plastic go over everything before I start, not after the first mess.
-
Tidied every evening
I clear up at the end of each day, so the kitchen is usable when I leave.
-
Dates you can plan around
Your quote gives proposed start and finish dates, so you know how long the kitchen will be affected.
Wall preparation
Getting kitchen walls ready for tiles
Kitchen walls usually reach me in one of two states.
Freshly plastered, often after a new kitchen goes in. This is the best possible start. New plaster is typically flat and sound, so once it's dry it just needs priming.
Stripped of old tiles. Here the surface can be anything from slightly uneven to badly damaged. A flat wall gets primer. An uneven one is boarded flat with backer board. Where sections of plasterboard have come away with the old tiles, I cut them out and fit new plasterboard, which is the right material away from wet areas.

Kitchen quotes
A kitchen quote with dates you can plan around
I talk through the job on the phone, look at your photos, then measure up on site. Your quote shows what's being used, what it costs and when your kitchen will be ready.
Your quote shows
- Each tile, adhesive and grout, with a link to the product
- A materials total and a labour total
- The days I expect to be working in your kitchen
- Proposed start and finish dates
What affects the price
- The number of cuts around sockets, switches, windows and corners
- Very large tiles on a small splashback
- Old tiles that need stripping and walls that need boarding
- A timber floor that needs backer board, if I'm tiling the floor too
I ask for the materials cost a week before the job starts, so everything is ordered and waiting on day one.

He came over the day after the initial enquiry and provided a quote I was happy with, and discussed timescale and materials needed. Rich was able to purchase grout, adhesive etc on my behalf which was great. The evening before the job started he visited to do a final survey and discuss options. For the job itself Rich was punctual, efficient and generally brilliant to work with - problem solving along the way with regular photo and video updates along the way. Really impressed with the service and finished results - had lots of compliments! Highly recommend.
Richard proved a friendly professional service. He did what he said he would do when he said he would. You cannot ask anymore than that. Very pleased with my new kitchen floor would highly recommend R A Tiling ππ
Rich did a fantastic job of my kitchen and bathroom after a full house refurb. I would recommend to anyone, lovely guy and competitive prices.

Kitchen FAQs
Kitchen tiling questions
How much does a kitchen splashback cost to tile?
It depends on the area, the tile size and how many cuts the wall needs. A run of worktop with four sockets and a window takes longer than a plain wall. Your itemised quote shows materials and labour separately.
Can you tile around my existing worktops and units?
Yes. I cover them with dust sheets and plastic, then tile neatly up to them.
Will the cuts around my sockets look neat?
Yes! That's the point of setting out. I work from a centre line and check where the tiles finish before fixing any. If a socket would get a thin sliver, I move the layout by half a tile.
My walls have just been plastered. Can you tile straight onto them?
Yes, once the plaster has dried and been primed. Fresh plaster is the ideal surface for tiling because it's typically flat and sound.
Do the old kitchen tiles need to come off?
Yes. I strip them, then prime a flat wall, board an uneven one, and replace any plasterboard that has broken away.
Which tiles work best for a kitchen splashback?
That's your call, and I'm happy to give an honest opinion on colour. I'll only flag size: very large tiles on a small splashback with lots of sockets mean more cutting and waste.
How long will my kitchen be out of action?
Your quote sets out how many days I expect to be working and proposed start and finish dates. I tidy at the end of every day so the room is usable when I leave.
