A tiled floor is only as good as what's under it

Floor tiling is where shortcuts show. Even a slight flex in the floor cracks grout and loosens tiles, often a couple of years after the job is done.

That’s why every floor I lay starts underneath: old tiles up, the subfloor checked, and timber floors made completely rigid before a single tile goes down. I tile kitchen, hallway, bathroom and open-plan floors across Sheffield and Barnsley, with 4 years’ experience behind every one.

Floors I tile

  • Kitchen and hallway floors
  • Bathroom and downstairs WC floors
  • Conservatory floors
  • Open-plan and living areas
  • Timber floorboards, on glued and screwed backer board
  • Large-format and patterned floor tiles

Why preparation matters

Floors that stay flat and solid

Floor problems start below the surface, so that's where I spend the time.

  • Glued and screwed, every time

Backer board is bedded in tile adhesive and screwed into the floorboards, so it can't lift or shift.

  • Doorways planned first

The floor is set out from the centre of the room, so thresholds and skirting get even cuts.

  • Tiles sized to the room

Very large tiles in a small hallway mean more cuts and waste. I'll tell you before you buy.

  • Adjoining rooms protected

Floor work spreads dust, so doorways and neighbouring floors are covered and cleaned at the end of each day.

Subfloor preparation

How I prepare a floor for tiling

I check the floor at the site visit, because what's under your feet decides the preparation.

Old floor tiles come up first, so I can see the surface underneath.

Timber floorboards get cement backer board. I bed each board in tile adhesive, then screw it down into the floorboards. The adhesive fills the gaps between board and floor and the screws pull it tight, so there's nothing left to flex.

That combination is what gives tiles a completely stable base.

Floor quotes

What goes under your floor, on paper

Preparation is the part of a floor you never see once it's done, so I make sure it's on the quote. Every board and bag of adhesive is listed alongside the tiles.

Listed on your quote

  • Floor tiles, backer board, adhesive and grout, each with a product link
  • Separate materials and labour totals
  • Time on site and proposed start and finish dates
  • Notes on anything I can't check until the old floor is up

What changes the price

  • Very large tiles, which are slower to cut and lay
  • Rooms with lots of doorways, bays or units to cut around
  • Timber floors that need backer board
  • Old floor tiles that need taking up first

I reply to every enquiry the same day and visit to check the floor before quoting.

Floor tiling FAQs

Floor tiling questions

Can you tile over floorboards?

Yes. I lay cement backer board bedded in tile adhesive, then screw it into the floorboards. That gives the tiles a completely stable base.

Why not just use plywood under floor tiles?

Plywood isn't a sufficient base for tiles, and cement board that's only screwed down can still move. Either way the floor flexes, and the tiles come loose or crack within a few years. Gluing and screwing the board is what stops that.

How much does floor tiling cost in Sheffield?

It depends on the size of the room, the tile size, how many cuts are needed and what the floor needs before tiling. Your itemised quote lists every material with a link, plus labour and start and finish dates.

Can you tile over my existing floor tiles?

I take existing tiles up and prepare the floor underneath rather than tiling over them. I'll check the floor at the site visit and explain what it needs.

Which tiles are best for a hallway floor?

A hallway takes more foot traffic than any other room, so pick a tile made for floors. Beyond that the choice is yours. I'll flag it if a large tile will mean lots of cuts around doorways.

How do you avoid thin cuts at doorways?

I set the floor out from a centre line and check where the tiles finish before fixing any. If a doorway or wall would get a thin sliver, I move the start point by half a tile.

Can you run the same floor through several rooms?

Yes. That's where setting out matters most. I plan from a centre line across the whole area so the lines run straight through each doorway.

Do you lay floors in Barnsley and Penistone?

Yes. I lay floors across Barnsley, Penistone and Sheffield, and out to Stocksbridge, Oxspring and Huddersfield.
