Conservatory floor tiling

Conservatory floor tiling in Sheffield & Barnsley

A conservatory floor is a long, open space where crooked lines show. I set it out from the centre before a single tile is fixed, so it looks straight from the moment you step in from the house.

Conservatory floor tiling in Sheffield & Barnsley

A conservatory floor that lines up with the house

A conservatory floor is usually the first thing you see from the house, and it's often a long room where any wandering line is obvious. That makes setting out the most important part of the job.

Before a tile is fixed, I lay the floor out from a centre line, check where it finishes at the walls and the doorway, and adjust until the cuts are balanced. Then it goes down on a properly prepared base, whether you're in Penistone, Oxspring or Sheffield.

Getting the floor right

What makes a conservatory floor work

A conservatory takes foot traffic from the house and the garden, and it's on show from both. These are the things I focus on.

  • Lines that run from the house

I plan the layout around the door into the house, so the floor looks straight as you walk in.

  • Balanced cuts along every wall

Cuts are planned to be even on both sides of the room, not a full tile at one end and a sliver at the other.

  • A base that stays put

Over timber, backer board is bedded in adhesive and screwed down so the floor can't move under the tiles.

  • The house protected

Dust sheets and plastic go down in the rooms next to the conservatory, and I tidy up every day.

Floor preparation

Preparing a conservatory floor

Conservatory floors vary a lot, so I check yours at the site visit before quoting.

Old tiles are taken up rather than tiled over, so the new floor goes onto a surface I've seen.

Timber floors get cement backer board, bedded in tile adhesive and screwed down. It's the method I use on every timber floor, because it's the one that stops tiles working loose.

Anything I can only judge once the old floor is up goes on your quote as a clear caveat.

Conservatory quotes

Your conservatory quote, line by line

A bigger floor means a bigger materials order, so you can see every line of it before you agree to anything.

Set out on your quote

  • Floor tiles, adhesive, grout and any backer board, each linked
  • Materials and labour totals, shown separately
  • How long I expect to be on site
  • Proposed start and finish dates

What can change the cost

  • Floor area and tile size: big tiles are slower to cut and lay
  • The shape of the room and the cuts at doorways and walls
  • Old tiles that need taking up
  • A timber floor that needs backer board

Want the room ready by a certain date? I'm usually booked 4–6 weeks ahead, so get in touch early.

Conservatory FAQs

Conservatory tiling questions

Can you tile a conservatory with a timber floor?

Yes. I lay cement backer board bedded in tile adhesive and screwed into the floor first, so the base is rigid before the tiles go down.

Can you take up my old conservatory tiles?

Yes. I take old tiles up rather than tiling over them, and prepare the floor underneath.

How much does it cost to tile a conservatory?

It depends on the floor area, the tile size, the shape of the room and what the floor needs before tiling. Your itemised quote lists every material with a link to the product, plus labour and start and finish dates.

Will the floor line up with the door to the house?

That's what the setting out is for. I plan the layout around the door into the house so the lines look straight as you walk through. If you want the floor to follow on from the next room, tell me at the site visit.

Are large tiles a good idea in a conservatory?

They can be, and the choice is yours. In an awkward shape with lots of cuts, very large tiles add time and cost, so I'll give you an honest view at the site visit.

Do you tile conservatories near Huddersfield?

Yes. I work across Huddersfield, Penistone, Oxspring and Stocksbridge, as well as Sheffield and Barnsley.
