Bathroom tiling in Sheffield & Barnsley
Bathroom tiler in Sheffield & Barnsley
Old tiles often hide crumbling plasterboard. I strip back, replace damaged boards with water-resistant board, then tile your bathroom walls, shower and floor. 4 years’ experience, built to last.

Bathroom tiling that starts behind the tiles
Steam and splashes find any weak spot, so a bathroom is only as good as the wall behind the tiles. Every bathroom I take on starts the same way: old tiles off, walls checked, and anything that won't hold cut out and replaced.
From a single shower wall in Stocksbridge to a full refit in Barnsley, you get an itemised quote first, with a clear note on anything I can't see until the old tiles come off.
Bathroom work I take on
- Full bathroom wall and floor tiling
- Shower areas and bath surrounds
- Stripping old tiles back to the wall
- Replacing damaged plasterboard with water-resistant board
- Bathroom floors over timber, on backer board
- Grouting and silicone finishing
Built for water and steam
What makes a bathroom last
The difference between a bathroom that looks good on day one and one that stays that way is mostly in the parts you don't see.
-
Water-resistant board, not plasterboard
Wherever a bathroom wall needs re-boarding, the replacement is a water-resistant board.
-
Patchwork walls made whole
When sections of board come away with the old tiles, I cut back to sound material rather than filling over the gaps.
-
Even cuts by the bath and tray
Each wall is planned from its centre, so the bath, shower tray and window edges get balanced cuts, not slivers.
-
Clean joints where it gets wet
Grout lines and silicone are finished neatly where the tiles meet the bath, tray and basin.
Behind the tiles
What’s hiding under your old bathroom tiles, and how I fix it
The most common problem is old plasterboard that has broken down. When the tiles come off, sections of board come away with them and leave a patchwork wall. What happens next depends on what's left.
Sound and flat: the wall is primed and ready to tile.
Sound but uneven: I board over it with backer board to get a flat surface.
Broken down in places: I cut the damaged sections out and replace them with water-resistant board, or overboard the whole wall with backer board where that's the better fix.

His finish is second to none and he is great at communicating with his customers. He is also incredibly tidy and punctual. My customers have a high expectation so I'm very careful about who I have doing work for me or who I recommend- I wholeheartedly recommend Rich, he's a real perfectionist. He's a really nice guy too!
Rich did a fantastic job of my kitchen and bathroom after a full house refurb. I would recommend to anyone, lovely guy and competitive prices.
Great job! Super reliable and listened to what I needed. Worked around my schedule to get all the tiling done on time.

Bathroom FAQs
Bathroom tiling questions
How much does it cost to tile a bathroom in Sheffield?
It depends on the size of the room, the tiles you pick and the state of the walls behind the old tiles. Big tiles and lots of cuts around pipework add time. After a site visit you get an itemised quote, with every material linked and labour shown separately.
Can you tile over my old bathroom tiles?
No. I always take them off first. It's the only way to see whether the wall behind is sound before new tiles go on.
What happens if the plasterboard breaks up when the tiles come off?
It's the most common thing I find in bathrooms. I cut out the damaged sections and replace them with water-resistant board, or overboard the wall with backer board. Your quote flags this as a possible extra before I start.
What board do you use in a bathroom?
Water-resistant board wherever a bathroom wall needs re-boarding, and cement backer board where a wall needs overboarding or a timber floor needs a solid base. Standard plasterboard is only for dry rooms.
Do you tile shower areas?
Yes. Shower walls and bath surrounds are a big part of my bathroom work, and they get the same wall preparation as the rest of the room.
Can you tile the bathroom floor too?
Yes. Upstairs bathrooms usually have timber floors, so I lay cement backer board bedded in adhesive and screwed down first. My floor tiling page explains why that matters.
How long does a bathroom take to tile?
It depends on the size of the room and how much re-boarding the walls need. Your quote gives the number of days I expect to be on site, plus proposed start and finish dates.
